US Highway 50 and Fairway Drive Intersection Construction

By Abbey Martin, Public Communications Specialist for the City of Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kansas — Construction of the intersection connecting North Fairway Drive to US Highway 50 is set to begin July 31, 2017, with perimeter markings and traffic control being installed July 27 and July 28.

The speed limit through the work zone will be reduced to 45 mph throughout the duration of construction with minimal stops to traffic. Access to Fairway Dr. south of US 50 will remain closed until construction is completed. The access to Kliesen St. north of US 50 at this intersection will only be closed when work is being completed on the westbound lanes of US 50. This new intersection will include the installation of traffic signals which will provide dedicated left turn lanes for traffic turning from Fairway Drive on to US 50 and from US 50 on to Fairway Drive.

“As long as there are no delays due to weather the project should be completed around Thanksgiving,” said Ray Slattery, Engineering Services Director for the City of Dodge City.

This project will be taking place during the beginning of the school year, working hours for the construction crews will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the weekdays. Those travelling on US 50 during these time should be cautious and aware of set traffic controls.

“The intersection will greatly improve safety for motorists exiting off of the highway at Fairway Dr. to access businesses to the north with the installation of traffic signals and a left turn lane,” said Tanner Rutschman, Civil Engineer for the City of Dodge City.  “This intersection [also] will open up the land directly to the south for future development and housing for residents of Dodge City.”

This a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Geometric Improvement (GI) Project which will be paid through a 50/50 contribution between the State and the City.
